DOE Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) / STTR
DOE competitive non-dilutive grants up to $1.1 million for small businesses developing clean energy and other DOE-mission technologies.
About this program
DOE SBIR/STTR provides phased non-dilutive funding for small businesses developing R&D in DOE-mission areas including critical minerals, advanced manufacturing, geothermal, clean energy, energy storage, hydrogen, nuclear, and grid technologies. Phase I awards (feasibility) reach approximately $200,000; Phase II awards (prototype and development) reach approximately $1.1 million. The program was reauthorized through FY 2031 by the Small Business Innovation and Economic Security Act signed April 13, 2026. DOE plans to open Phase II topics in spring 2026 and Phase I topics later in 2026.
Eligibility
For-profit U.S. small businesses meeting SBA size standards (generally fewer than 500 employees) with majority U.S. ownership. STTR also requires partnership with a non-profit research institution.
